History
During the harsh economic climate of New York in the early 1900′s, a small group of compassionate women founded the Brooklyn Ladies Hebrew Home for the Aged, in the Brownsville section of Brooklyn. The Home provided poor, elderly members of their community with quality health care and a home to spend their final days. Today, that spirit of compassion and community lives on as the MJHS, serves the needs of over 40,000 people across all five New York City boroughs, and Nassau and Suffolk counties. What began as a single nursing home in Brooklyn now provides a spectrum of health care services for people of all ages:
- Home care
- Palliative care
- Hospice
- Long term care
- St. Mary’s Metropolitan Home Care for Kids
- Skilled nursing facilities (3)
- Adult day health care (2)
- MJHS Health Plans
The philanthropic spirit of our inspirational women founders has been a cornerstone and guiding philosophy of MJHS for over 100 years. The culture of philanthropy they inspired led to the formation of MJHS Foundation, which has been instrumental in the development of new services and gives affiliated programs the support they need to provide charitable care. In partnership with individuals, businesses, foundations and government, we work together to maximize access to high-quality, compassionate health care at every stage of life.
