Caring for Alixe and her Mom
My mom, Lily Rapaport, led a remarkable life. Born a century ago, she fled the pogroms and eventually made it to New York, where she met and married my wonderful father.
A natural caregiver, phenomenal artist, tai chi instructor, philanthropist and graceful dancer, my mom received care from a hospice doctor and regular home visits from a hospice nurse. Our social worker and rabbi offered a different kind of support – emotional and spiritual. When together, we talked about the past and planned for the future. And I participated in a unique group for caregivers that’s exclusive to MJHS Hospice. Sharing with others like me was special and helped me prevent burnout.
As a trained dance therapist, I understand the power of expression and I appreciate the gift of compassion. MJHS Hospice held us and helped us keep in balance. We were never alone. We always felt secure.
The special time with mom at the end of her life is now just one part of a lifelong repertoire of wonderful memories.
